Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Funk.
Alice, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It’s been a difficult journey. Personally, I had to overcome my upbringing before I could even think about starting a company. I grew up in Malaysia with my relatives because my immediate family immigrated to the US when I was only a few years old. When I was old enough to come to the US in my late teens, it was like moving in with strangers at that point. I struggled to connect with my immediate family, assimilate to a new life in the US, and learn a new language. Over the years since, I was able to piece it all together. It wasn’t an easy path, but I’m happy with where I am today. As for FunkFitCo, putting up the cash to start the business was a hard decision. The odds are against me, but I believe this is bigger than me. This has the opportunity to really impact many women. Second, listening to other people’s opinions about how to build the company or advertise the vision has also been challenging. It became very easy to doubt myself, but I’ve learned to be confident in the vision knowing that we’re on the right path. Lastly, this journey has taught me to be truly grateful to those that support this effort and building a business is a continuous learning opportunity. I’m proud of what FunkFitCo has accomplished so far, but I know there is much more to learn and grow from as we continue to touch the lives of our community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All my life, I’ve struggled to find clothes that fit me. I’ve always had a smaller build and couldn’t find anything that fit me. Throughout the years, I see and hear of others dealing with the same issue. For many, the pant legs, shirt length, or sleeves are too long. And what do we do about it? Most of us just tell ourselves or even our friends, “…that’s how it’s supposed to fit.” So I decided to help those like me by creating a clothing line to feel better about the clothes they’re in because these pieces are crafted for their body type. Honestly, the journey hasn’t been easy, but FunkFitCo is the first attempt to meet the needs of women that bigger clothing companies have overlooked. Today, FunkFitCo is focused on empowering women by networking and building relationships across different platforms to embrace women with a fitness conscious lifestyle.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
There are not many brands that focus on petite sizes so I am definitely proud that FunkFitCo fills this need. Although, when I say petite, I am referring to women who have been under served with the sizes available to them from the other major clothing brands. FunkFitCo believes that serving these women with clothing that fits will allow them to be more comfortable instead of constantly adjusting a waistband or sleeve throughout the day. By taking away this unnecessary annoyance, we believe that it will help empower women and take the day on knowing that they don’t need to worry about a constant adjustment but focus on their personal growth and achieving their goals.
